PAMAR and its Latin American Cultural Week present our new Latin American Performing Arts Marathon

Pan American Musical Art Research, Inc. (PAMAR) and its Latin American Cultural Week (LACW) is expanding the creative vision of the organization, with a Latin American Performing Arts Marathon featuring music, dance, and theater from across the Americas.
The Marathon, which will launch the 2008 LACW, will generate press and excitement for LACW, and for its performing artists. The idea is to unite the performers, and their different audiences, within the framework of one overarching event, while also highlighting the distinct cultural traditions that each group draws on. The Marathon will begin at 4pm, and last until midnight, with 20 minutes for each performance, and 5 minutes of set-up between each act. The Marathon will be comprised of at least 15 acts, with time for opening remarks and a ten minute intermission halfway through. We have selected performers from a wide range of artistic disciplines and cultural backgrounds, all with a tradition of artistic excellence. Some of these artists have also been teaching artists in PAMAR’s educational program, others are past and future LACW participants, as well as world-renowned artists that PAMAR will have the honor of collaborating with for the first time this year, in this exciting new project. The Marathon will include music, dance and theater performances. The dance groups represent styles from across the Americas, from Mexican dance to the Tango of Argentina, from afro-Cuban tap to contemporary interpretations of Puerto Rican traditions. Our music groups our equally varied, with groups coming from countries throughout the Americas including Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and New York. Theater groups will add artistic depth to an already geographically and stylistically diverse line-up.

By juxtaposing artists from different countries and artistic traditions, the event will embody PAMAR’s belief in the value and importance of intercultural exchange and artistic collaboration. The Marathon will also serve to build and diversify audiences for these performers, allowing them to showcase their work in New York, at no cost to the artists. Much thought will be given to the order of the acts, to allow for geographic and stylistic juxtapositions, and to introduce audiences to styles, forms, and artists they may be unfamiliar with. The event has no age minimum or maximum, and publicity will be distributed throughout the city, as well as online on Latin American and Performing Arts websites.

The Performing Arts Marathon seeks to provide 6 hours of dance, music and theater which will act as a testament to the diversity of artistic traditions and innovations coming from Latin America, while also uniting them under one overarching event. With such a rich variety of performances and artistic visions represented, we hope to dispel the conception that being Latino, or Latin American, constitutes a singular artistic identity. The Marathon celebrates the diversity of distinct artists and audiences, while emphasizing that ultimately we are all part of The Americas.
