THE CONGA KINGS
This 11-member rumba group features three master congueros of Afro-Cuban music: Cándido Camero, Carlos “Patato” Valdez and Giovanni Hidalgo, the current master of congas, under the direction of Ray Santos. An evening with Brazilian pianist/composer JOVINO SANTOS NETO
Presented by Jim Luce and Adventure Music
In his solo piano recitals, 2-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto explores all the possibilities of the instrument, combining the rhythmic and harmonic audacity of Hermeto Pascoal’s pieces with his own Brazilian tone poems and sambas, spanning the distance between lyrical and effervescent within a few measures. He also pays tribute to some of the great Brazilian composers like Jobim, Pixinguinha and Ernesto Nazareth. TANGO! PABLO ASLAN’S AVANTANGO
Argentine-born bassist/composer Pablo Aslan, a top artist in the tango revival, modernizes the sensuous and passionate tango with a program of original compositions, classic and modern tangos, and improvisations. His ensemble features leading Argentine musicians, dancers and choreographers who appeared in Broadway’s Tango Argentino and Forever Tango. ALAS - MODERN TANGO
Alas captures the unique ambiance of Buenos Aires today by combining the most radical styles of Tango, Jazz, Argentine Folk and Classical Music. Highlights of the Christie’s Latin American Sale, New York, will include outstanding works by Rufino Tamayo and Fernando Botero; a masterpiece by Alfredo Ramos Martínez from 1938; a seminal double-sided Wifredo Lam work, also dated 1938; and monumental marble sculptures by Francisco Zúñiga and Agustín Cardenas; as well as the work of many other important Latin American modernists. Sotheby’s November 20- 21 auction of Latin American Art sale will feature an exceptional array of works by the most important artists of Latin America, including Wifredo Lam, Matta, Gunther Gerzso and Fernando Botero. A strong selection of works from the Cuzco and Mexican schools will coincide with the Philadelphia Museum of Art exhibition of Colonial Art as will the 19th century landscapes section. This Skin I’m In: Contemporary Dominican Art from El Museo del Barrios Permanent Collection. This exhibition introduces to New York more than 50 works by 30 artists exploring the pictorial representation of merengue, the genre of music and dance that has come to define Dominican culture and identity.
