Course Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of acoustic guitar technique: strumming/ picking technique, correct fingerings and tuning the guitar. Students will be introduced to the rudiments of music (types of notes, notes values, time signatures, chord structure and scales). Students will learn to read and perform simple guitar melodies/ chords and they need not have previous guitar instruction.

Emphasis will be made on learning songs in different styles and from different cultures, and the material will be accompanied with audio recordings and visual material such as pictures, internet, etc. and actual performances from professional musicians that will explain the style of their music and teach the songs performed to the students.

The teacher will couch the students in preparation for a performance at the end of the semester. The material to be performed will be discussed and chosen by the teacher and the students and will be picked from the material presented in class.

Course Objectives:

Guitar class is designed to:
+ Help students develop basic performing skills on the instrument.
+ Introduce the basic skills necessary in reading musical notation.
+ Achieve a general understanding of the guitar’s history and it’s role on different cultures and styles of music.
+ Provide the student with a basic background in music that will encourage the student to remain actively in music as a performer (either as a professional or as an avocation).
